Android 4.3 announced, for Nexus 7, Nexus 4, Nexus 10 And Galaxy Nexus

After weeks of leaks, other leaks, and false starts, Google finally took the wraps off its next version of Android at an event on Wednesday in San Francisco. The new version of Android is actually the third version to carry the "Jelly Bean" label, as opposed to the rumored next-generation leap, "Key Lime Pie." Android 4.3 isn’t an overly dramatic advancement over Android 4.2, but its highlights include:

  • BLUETOOTH LOW ENERGY SUPPORT
  • REDESIGNED CAMERA INTERFACE
  • MULTI-USER RESTRICTED PROFILES
  • OPENGL|ES 3.0
  • DRM APIs
  • NOTIFICATION ACCESS
Bluetooth Smart, aka Bluetooth Low Energy, makes it easy to connect accessories to Android devices without draining too much battery. Where Android 4.2 arranged its camera settings in a circle, Android 4.3 arranges them in an arc that you navigate by dragging your finger through it.

The new operating system will include multi-user restricted profiles. These make it possible to do parental controls on the tablet. For example, parents can control which applications their kids can access by changing the performance of apps and other services based on who’s logged in. It also blocks out access to stuff like in-app purchases. It's joined by OpenGL ES 3.0 support, enabling better graphics Hugo Barra mentioned that Android would be the first mobile platform to officially

It's shipping with the new Nexus 7, Google's previous-generation Nexus devices will get the update, starting today, including The Nexus 4, Tegra 3-based Nexus 7, the Nexus 10, and the Galaxy Nexus will be updated first, beginning today. Older devices like the Motorola Xoom and Nexus S were both dropped in the Android 4.2 update, with the HTC One and Galaxy S4 Google Editions getting it "very soon" as well.
